Benefits Of Interlocking Paving Stones

Pavers Vs. Asphalt

Interlock pavers, although generally having higher initial costs than asphalt, are more durable and can have a lifespan of more than 3x that of asphalt. Interlock pavers, with some simple maintenance, can last upwards of 45 + years, compared to asphalt with an average life span of 12-15 years and maintenance needed in the first 3-5 years. Interlock pavers provide a benefit of a rigid surface compared to a flexible asphalt. With the heat of the sun the asphalt can flex, rut, and crack more easily in comparison to interlocking pavers.

When maintenance is required, costs can be comparable to asphalt but typically won’t be necessary for 10-15 years if installed correctly. Paving stones are relatively easy and cheap to maintain when the time comes because they can be removed, base repaired, and paving stones re-used. This makes paving stones a great alternative to asphalt.

Interlocking paving stones is a great alternative to typical asphalt or concrete paving when it comes to driveways, walkways, and patios.

There are both advantages and disadvantages for every type of pavement, but when you start comparing its hard to argue that interlocking paving stones isn’t the clear winner. Interlock pavers are ideal for creating unique designs, curb appeal, and increasing property value, while being more durable, functional, and out-lasting other paving options. Different paver styles, colours, and thicknesses can be installed in a variety of patterns to suit your project needs and have your neighbors envious of your beautiful driveway, walkway, or patio.

Pavers Vs. Concrete

Interlock pavers are also typically higher in cost than basic concrete, but are actually comparable when it comes to coloured and stamped concrete. Interlock paving stones can have 2-3x the compressive strength of concrete, which can help stand up to vehicles, furniture, and more.

Another benefit of interlocking pavers is the density of the stone and subsequent drainage benefits.  Paving stones are much less porous than concrete, allowing less moisture to enter and saturate the stone. Having water in and around stone or concrete can cause cracking when the temperatures change and the freeze-thaw cycle occurs. Living here in Kingston and the area means unfortunately our surfaces will always be exposed to this! By using interlocking pavers, less water permeates through the stone, and the sand filled joints can catch the excess surface water and transport it to the granular drainage layer below. Where concrete will inevitably crack, paving stones are much less likely.

Repairs to interlock pavers are also typically less intrusive compared to concrete repairs. When concrete cracks, although there are some minor fixes such as sealant or epoxy, the typical repair involves a full replacement, or noticeable patch repairs. With interlock, when repairs are required, it is typically possible to remove the stones, repair the base, and replace the stones, leaving little to no trace of a repair.
